so, it's been awhile... a long while, but i'm back with a request:

my dear friend lisa elmaleh is trying to raise funds for the next leg of her trip to the evergldes. she's been making photographs of this diminishing national treasure since 2008. i had the great fortune of accompanying her on one such trip, so this is a project close to my heart.

below is a link to a short video Lisa put together explaining both her project and her process. Lisa photographs using an 8x10 camera on glass plate negatives coated with collodian, a 19th century photographic process that is both time consuming and expensive. Every dollar helps, but if you don't feel like you can contribute, please be so kind as to forward this video along.

i saw these photos at a clothing store near union square and was really struck by them. the artist, jennifer trausch, works at the polaroid studio where she operates the 20x24 polaroid camera. this series was shot using the 20x24 polaroid which she lugged from new york down to new orleans. the melancholy in these images deftly follows the tradition of american southern photography.

philadelphia photo arts center: call for entries

this call for entries is just for the philly gang:

for anyone unfamiliar with this organization, the philadelphia photo arts center, it's a new digital lab and photo space (and so much more) that will open in august in philadelphia. the inimitable sarah stolfa is spearheading the project.

the goal of the philadelphia photo arts center is to make philadelphia a place where important photography gets made, shown and talked about. emerging local photographers are essential to that goal. they will be our photo community’s next leaders and the source of important new work and new ideas. PPAC is therefore excited to launch our exhibition space with "NEXT: emerging philadelphia photographers." selected entries will be exhibited in PPAC’s new exhibition space in the crane arts building from august 18 – november 29, 2009.

first, second, and third prize winners will receive, $500, $300, and $200 gift certificates respectively for digital services at PPAC. the competition is open to all subject matter and photographic processes.

the entry fee is $20 for a maximum of 5 images. entry fees are not refundable. all entries must be received by friday, june 26, 2009.

april: sites of impact by stan gaz

i managed to sneak this in right before the close of the month (better late than never)...

i picked up stan gaz's sites of impact at an opening of the same name at clampart tonight.

because:

1/ the prints were bea-u-ti-ful. silver gelatin prints. a rarity these days. i was in awe of them. they were like 50x60 or something and the grain was enlarged in this amazing way. you could almost feel the textures. lisa pointed out that they reminded her of pointillist paintings.

2/ i know nothing about these photographs except that they are images of meteorites so i am excited to read the introduction. and as i am currently listening to a short history of nearly everything where bill bryson talks for a bit about meteorites, they were on my mind.

part 3: blogging

on blogging...initially I was very against blogging...I didn't understand the networking capacity of them, and I did not follow or look at any. I hadn't realized how important they did become as a tool for showing work, but also starting and joining in on discussions. As you said my blog is very new, but I am happy I am doing it. Not only because in two months or so of having it, I am being interviewed by another blogger...but it also is a good outlet for me to get my ass in gear and get work scanned, look back through old work, and a forum to post brand new work as soon as I make it. And since the exposure project's blog has been live, it has greatly spread our name into the community, and gotten us in touch with some great people. You mentioned J.M. Colberg, through the blog world, we became friends with him and he was gracious enough to write the forward to our 3rd exposure project publication. And since I have the opportunity, thanks to Ben of the exposure project for starting the blog as well as maintaining it, as he is the main voice of the exposure project blog.

as for the future of blogging, who knows, there very well could be a new way of communicating in the very near future that we will all in some way shape or form become a part of. things like twitter or flickr, neither of which I like very much, seem to be useful tools for people. both outlets I feel like water down and saturate us with information and pictures, that I don’t feel is necessary. blogging in a way very much does this too to a certain extent, and like you said, you have a hard time keeping up with other people's blogs as well as your own. I feel the same way. But the availability of new work and images is an inspiration for me and makes me get to my blog as well as gives me a lot of work and ideas to look at and think about, which for me right now is great.

this is a personal note that adam included in his email to me that I’ve decided to share because it fits the theme:

part 2: education

1/ can you talk about your education a little bit?
I went to the New England School of Photography, graduated 5 years ago with a concentration in black and white. I had a blast at NESoP and actually am still involved with the school today as a TA for the 2nd year black and white program. It was and is still a big part of my photographic life. No MFA right now...ultimately I don’t have any plans to head back to school, but I’m not ruling it out completely in the future.

2/ why do you feel that you do not want to pursue an mfa?
I try and way the pros and cons, but usually end up with the thought that if I just keep plugging away at my own work, that an MFA wouldn’t help me that much. I may be totally wrong in that assumption, but so far I don’t see it holding me back any. The most attractive part of getting into that situation again is I know I would be pushed to make work, and a lot of it! So that is always something that I think about, so I wouldn’t say that I don’t WANT to get back into school, I'm either just not ready or the time isn’t right.

3/ is this something you've spent a lot of time waffling/obsessing about (like i obviously do), or was it a relatively easy decision for you?
No I haven't spent a lot of time thinking about it. When I got out of school, I was very happy to get going on my own work and not be caught up in the school environment. I do miss school, the constant pushing and peer support, but it's just not in my sights right now as something I want to continue with. Being that I don’t have a BA, the idea of getting back into that program and then moving on to an MFA program, scares me a bit! It's such a time commitment, not to mention the expense of it all. Again, I don’t rule it out completely as the idea of some type of teaching role in the future has crossed my mind, just not right now.

i am back from my trip and finally up to the task of getting some posting done. i won't see any of the pictures i took in the everglades for a little while as it will take lisa a bit to process them for me (since i'm lame and pay my friend to do my bitch work...).

ok. so. this post marks the official start of the "pho to speak" interview series here at bluebird. a little back story: a few months ago adam emailed me to tell me about the launching of his new blog. adam and i do not know each other (nor did i even know who he was actually). but the idea for the interviews had been brewing in my head for sometime so i timidly inquired to see if he would be interested in participating. we then corresponded for what felt like forever (i am most grateful to him for answering my often redundant queries both patiently and graciously). the following interview is the result, presented in three parts.

part 1: career

1/ would you say that photography is a part of your daily life? if so, in what aspect?
I am thinking about photography a lot more as of late, the artistic side of it, but also the commercial part as well. I really try not to over think the work, I have found that I end up working less the more I think about a certain project or body of work. I tend to work in big pushes and take downtime when I want or need it. Typically I tend to shoot only when I am traveling somewhere, I seem to be able to more comfortably shoot while on the road then when I’m here in Boston. So my shooting schedule is sporadic at best! But hopefully that will change. I have been trying a new assignment for myself of shooting one roll of film every morning before I start my day.

2/ are you currently earning your living from photography?
No not really. I try and get as many photo related jobs as I can...Luckily I have made friends with a few great working photographers that, when the time is right, will call on me for help. I don’t actively seek out assisting work, but it’s something that, when the opportunities come, I love to do. Mostly it has been printing work, black and white dark room work. I have recently been making a big push to get my work seen by a larger audience, but have yet to see any return. But that’s ok!

3/ how do you ultimately see the arc of your photographic career? in other words, are you hoping to pursue a fine art path or would you be satisfied commercially etc.
I’m trying to marry the two right now in some way. There are opportunities that I would not have considered a few years back, in so far as finding ways to use my art work to work for me commercially. I haven't had much success at this point, but I've only been taking this approach seriously for less than a year. That being said, I am still working on different bodies of work for the purpose of approaching galleries.

where to begin?

i went to a lecture at sva this week, "collecting contemporary photography--with an emphasis on emerging artists." it was really very fascinating and covered issues that i had encountered while working at gallery 339.

someone on the panel mentioned that when in need of inspiration she turns to the photo section at the strand bookstore.

i am often in need of inspiration.

so i went.

only i wasn't really prepared. i've never, ever seen so many photo books in one place and this includes the photo sections at several well respected college art libraries. i need to go there sans bag, sans coat and in a pair of stretchy pants so i can plop down indian-style on a spot on the floor for hours upon hours. possibly i should also bring snacks.

also: i don't know how much longer i can maintain the "flickr a day" series. my eyes are being saturated with too much mediocrity, and all those bad pictures are starting to make me bitter. i'd like to replace them with a picture a day project featuring images of my own, but i'm not sure i have the discipline for that kind of project.

i'm welcome to suggestions from you, my ever silent audience.

puzzling

sometimes i imagine that photographs are puzzles: the whole is greater than it's parts. each photograph is an accumulation of innumerable elements arranged in a rectangular frame. the act of photographing is in turn an attempt to piece together these disparate elements to achieve a whole.

for several years the puzzles i tried to solve in my photos were not compositional ones. the fun for me was in gesture and light and often focus. recently formality has really grabbed me in my picture making. now i find myself shooting 2 1/4 at f-22. my eyes are still adjusting to the unforgiving sharpness.

i guess all art is really about this kind of problem solving: take a given set of limitations, play within those confines until you create something that resolves said problems in a successful way. the obvious snag is that the definition of success is rather ambiguous.

my personal definition: magical

i say magical, because even though art can be the process of fitting puzzle pieces together, the great whole is nothing short of miraculous. it makes you tingle. forget to breath.

1/ the images are so eerily disturbing. yet beautiful. almost a perfect blend of ralph eugene meatyard and joel peter witkin.

i went to d.c. last weekend to see a friend. on the way back to her apartment, while we were discussing what to do with our weekend, i spotted a banner advertising an exhibition of "the americans". it was quickly settled that we would go. luckily enough there was another photo exhibit being shown there as well entitled "oceans, rivers and skies," so it was a two for one.

1/ "looking in: robert frank's the americans"

the show was pretty good but i didn't really learn anything i didn't already know. although there were a few copies of publications i hadn't ever seen before.

2/ "oceans, rivers, and skies: ansel adams, robert adams, and alfred steiglitz"

ok this show was curated very strangely. i honestly don't even know what to say about it. there were images from steiglitz's equivalence series and then some images of both ansel and robert adams' seascapes. i just didn't really get it. i mean don't get me wrong, i understood it, i just didn't get it.

what remains: the life and work of sally mann

i guess my interest in sally mann has waned over the years. i've bypassed this documentary on the shelves at the rental store many many times. the other night i couldn't find any movies that i was interested in seeing, and somehow i found myself at home with three different art documentaries. what remains was among them and it was by far the best of the three films i rented (including the meandering eggleston in the real world). in this film, steven cantor was able to both shed new light on her pictures for me and also transcend the work by presenting a fascinating portrait of the creative process and an artist's life.

one of the my favorite moments of the film: sally mann learns that pace macgill has cancelled her upcoming exhibition of "what remains." she had been exceedingly excited about the show, and when she hears of the cancellation she spends the entire day sobbing. so here she is, this artist of international acclaim, essentially as famous as any photographer can hope to be, and upon learning that pace macgill has cancelled her show, she is totally paralyzed. we watch her second guess the body of work she has painstakingly built over the course of 4 years. the scene struck me as such a clear illustration of how universal the plague of self doubt is, and that doubt will wash over all of us in vicious waves over the course of our lives.

sally mann is helplessly articulate. just one quote of many that grabbed me, in this case in reference to her landscape series:

"there is magic in the landscape. the question is whether i can get at it."

(p.s. all i wanted to do when this movie was over was grab my camera and shoot something.)

i was browsing google images today and saw the above image by imogen cunningham.

two thoughts occurred to me simultaneously:

1/ i had seen this picture before. i can't recall exactly how long ago it was that i first saw it. but i recognized it immediately and intensely. i know i spent a lot of time with imogen's images when i was in high school. and i remember using her work as the basis for a history assignment freshman year of college.

2/ not only did i recognize the image, but it reminded me of not just one, but several of my own photographs (example below). i can say with certainty that i was not looking at imogen's work when i took the below picture. i was studying in prague and looking at sudek and koudelka and reading kafka.

proof, yet again, that pictures will stew in my brain for untold periods of time before i draw upon them for one purpose or another.

january (take 2): william eggleston's guide

i went to see the eggleston show at the whitney on sunday. it was packed. the show was pretty good. i really liked a lot of the images he took in the 80s actually. but i bought william eggleston's guide while i was there, so my new years resolution seems to be off to a good start.

i love how her hair obscures nearly her whole face, the way the sliver of light hits her hand, and the neatly folded money she's holding gently between her fingers.
