carey kirkella
i have to admit that when i first went to carey kirkella's website, i was mostly curious that there was another photographer out there who spells her first name the same way as i do. but in the end i couldn't resist these hilarious images of little girls at dance recitals. mostly because these pictures are unexpectedly not about social commentary: the parents are not exploiting their kids, and the kids don't look unhappy or mistreated, or pathetic. these are just amusing pictures of little girls being cute and annoying, caught red-handed by carey's flash. i love it so much.

jamilah abdul-sabur
jamilah abdul-sabur submitted these photos with her resume for an internship position and i was really taken with them. i really love the gesture in the image below, and how the hair becomes a powerful character in the photograph, creating such unease by obscuring the girl's face.
and i find the girl's gaze in the image above completely arresting, not to mention the hint of a smirk she wears, or how awkwardly she balances on the side of her foot. and here her hair looks like it's in conversation with the branches behind her.
i really can't decide which image i find stronger.

dreaming in pictures
last night i dreamt of taking photographs. i was taking pictures of a line of laundry, but i kept thinking, i don't want to be taking pictures of this anymore. i guess it's time to move on.
as hard as it is for me to accept, this is the first time in my life that i can't find time for picture making. even when i was stock piling film all last year (still unprocessed by the way), i was at least still shooting. i hope this doesn't last long. this terrifies me.
